When i connect my headset to the cable it works fine and i can hear (green jack), but when i connect line in (red jack) laptops still continues to record with the webcam, even when i connect my headset's mic. There are several problems that could cause an external mic to not work and it is hard to figure out which one might be the one. Windows 10 -- most of the posts we have been getting for the last few months are from people who installed this new operating system and then have audio problems. I would urge anyone who does not have a compelling reason to use the new OS to wait until the audio problems have been worked out. Audio driver. The Windows native audio driver does not support a laptop's external mic jack and so the Realtek audio driver has to be installed for the jack to work. It could be faulty. The adapter cable. It could be faulty or have a different pin arrangement than the laptop's jack has. The jack uses impedance sensing to detect a mic and the cable might have the wrong impedance, or be throwing off the sensing in some other way. Your best bet might be to get a usb jack. There are some simple ones available from Amazon and other internet stores that are inexpensive and look similar to this: Usb audio devices work independently of the laptop's audio hardware and so should avoid all of the problems unless the problem is within Windows 10 itself. You mentioned 'line in' so I should note that neither the laptop's headset jack nor the usb jack support true line in (stereo). They only support mono mic recording. For true line-in on the Inspiron 15 3521 you would need to get a more expensive usb sound card or audio interface that has dedicated line-in jacks. However note that a mic will not normally work with line-in jacks unless the mic signal is first routed through a mic pre-amp to bring the mic signal up to line level. A mic signal is too low for line-in jacks to use so it has to be boosted.
